A contractor quoting a boiler installation in Delaware County has to account for what the heating system will actually run against, not what a standard load calculation assumes. 88 severe weather events were recorded in Delaware County, Indiana between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is a regular feature of operating here, and a boiler that is undersized, poorly insulated at its connections, or set up without adequate pressure relief will feel that load every winter. Sizing and sealing decisions that might be adequate elsewhere become points of failure in a place where the system is pushed this often.

Unfinished basement with exposed wood joists, galvanized and insulated flexible ductwork overhead, concrete block walls, a coiled black hose and two cardboard boxes on the bare concrete floor.

Ductwork laid down for one kind of heating system does not automatically suit another, and in Delaware County a large share of houses were fitted out before modern boiler configurations were standard. Half the homes in Delaware County, Indiana were built in 1967 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor quoting a boiler installation here will open walls or pull access panels to see what the existing distribution system actually is before any equipment gets priced, because what it costs to adapt that ductwork to a new unit varies with what is there, not with what the house looks like from the street.

What a New Boiler Installation Covers

Isometric cutaway illustration of a single-storey house showing a boiler with a flue pipe, orange pipework running to wall-mounted radiators in several rooms furnished with a sofa, table and beds.

The boiler itself sits in a mechanical room, basement, or utility space and is the unit that heats water to be distributed through the house. Alongside it, the expansion tank manages pressure changes in the system as water heats and cools. A pressure relief valve mounts directly on the boiler as a safety device.

From the boiler, supply and return pipes run through the house to the heat emitters, which are either radiators standing against walls or radiant tubing set into floors. A circulator pump, mounted on the piping near the boiler, moves the heated water through those runs and back again.

The drawing shows a representative layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly what applies to this house.
